The Southern Hemisphere's premier fighter jet experience over volcanic terrain and pristine Pacific coastline
The Ultimate New Zealand Aviation Adventure
New Zealand's Bay of Plenty region provides one of the most visually spectacular settings for a fighter jet flight anywhere on the planet. Departing from Tauranga Airport, the L-39 Albatros climbs swiftly over a landscape shaped by millennia of volcanic activity, where rugged calderas meet turquoise harbours and white-sand beaches stretch along a dramatic coastline. The combination of powerful jet performance and unparalleled natural beauty makes this sortie unlike any other fighter jet experience in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Aero L-39 Albatros is renowned as the world's most widely operated military jet trainer, trusted by air forces across more than thirty nations for advanced pilot training and light combat operations. Its tandem cockpit places you directly behind the pilot with an expansive canopy that offers unobstructed panoramic views in every direction. As you sweep along the Bay of Plenty at speeds exceeding 700 kilometres per hour, the volcanic peak of Mount Maunganui, the offshore island of Motiti, and the distant Kaimai Ranges will unfold in ways that no other vantage point can reveal. This is a singular opportunity to experience military-grade flight performance above one of the world's most breathtaking landscapes.

The Experience
Your L-39 sortie from Tauranga is designed to deliver authentic military jet performance combined with the stunning visual reward of New Zealand's coastal and volcanic scenery. Your pilot will tailor the flight to your preferences:
Before You Fly
This is a guided passenger flight experience. A fully qualified military-trained pilot commands the aircraft at all times. No flying experience, licence, or certification is needed to participate in this sortie.
Participants must be a minimum of 18 years old on the day of the flight. A valid passport or government-issued photo ID is required for identification purposes at check-in. No upper age limit applies, subject to medical fitness.
A standard level of physical health is required to safely withstand the G-forces encountered during aerobatic flight. Participants with heart conditions, recent surgery, severe back problems, or uncontrolled seizure disorders may not be eligible. A medical questionnaire must be completed before the flight.
The L-39 cockpit accommodates participants weighing up to 113 kg (249 lbs) with a height range of 155 cm (5'1") to 200 cm (6'7"). These constraints are dictated by the ejection seat and harness system and cannot be waived.
Everything You Need
A detailed ground briefing conducted by your pilot covers the L-39's performance characteristics, cockpit instrumentation, communication procedures, emergency protocols, and the planned flight route over the Bay of Plenty region.
All required equipment is supplied, including a professional flight suit, aviation helmet with intercom system, oxygen mask, anti-G suit, and gloves. Everything is fitted to you on the day to ensure comfort and safety throughout the sortie.
Approximately 30 to 45 minutes of flight time in the rear cockpit of the L-39 Albatros. The route takes you along the dramatic Bay of Plenty coastline and over volcanic terrain, with aerobatic manoeuvres and the possibility of hands-on control.
After touchdown, your pilot will walk you through the highlights of the sortie. You will receive an official flight certificate documenting your L-39 Albatros experience over Tauranga as a permanent record of the achievement.
Common Questions
Tauranga Airport is located on the North Island of New Zealand, approximately two and a half hours' drive southeast of Auckland. Domestic flights from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch service Tauranga directly. The airfield is also easily accessible by car via State Highway 2, with ample parking available on site.
The flight route showcases the extraordinary natural diversity of New Zealand's Bay of Plenty region. Expect sweeping views of the Pacific coastline, the volcanic cone of Mount Maunganui, the harbour and offshore islands, lush green hinterland, and on clear days, the distant volcanic plateau of the central North Island. The visual experience is as remarkable as the flying itself.
Flights operate year-round, subject to suitable weather conditions. The Bay of Plenty enjoys one of New Zealand's most favourable climates, with particularly settled conditions from November through April. However, stunning flights are conducted throughout every season, and winter sorties can offer exceptionally clear visibility and dramatic skies.
The L-39 Albatros has an outstanding safety record spanning over fifty years of global military service. It was purpose-built as a tandem-seat trainer, designed from inception to carry a second occupant. The aircraft is maintained to exacting aviation authority standards, and all flights are conducted by pilots with extensive military and civilian jet experience.
