Nomex Flight Suits: Leaders In The Industry

When it comes to fire resistant clothing, there is no room for error. Fire resistant fabrics are quite literally the lifeblood for many professionals, and can mean the difference between life and death for those wearing them. For this reason, it is essential to make sure fire resistant flight suits are the highest quality and offer the greatest protection from both heat sources and flame sources. Among the leaders in the industry is Nomex, which has been providing fire resistant fabrics to the U.S. military, as well as many other professionals for decades. Nomex continues to be the leading fire resistant material used in flight suits for the superior protection it provides to wearers as well as comfort and durability.

Why Is Nomex The Leader In Fire Resistant Fabrics?

Nomex was originally developed in the 1960s by the DuPont Company. Since then, it has been tested and improved continually to provide the best protection from fire, heat, chemicals, and even cold conditions. Nomex flight suits, particularly the CWU 27/p flight suit, are composed of 92% nomex fibers, 5% Kevlar, and 3% P-140 anti-static fiber. The result is a flight suit which exceeds standards for fire and heat resistance. This is why Nomex flight suits are the ones used by the U.S. military. Not only are these flight suits used by U.S. pilots, but even ground troops overseas to protect against flares, flame, and explosives as well as exposure to chemicals and extreme cold conditions.

How Does Nomex Work?

Nomex is manufactured in two different forms: it is produced as full sheets of fabric, and it is also produced as individual fibers which are weaved into a completely fire-resistant fabric. It is a synthetic aromatic polyamid polymer, which means that it is a manufactured material which consists of long chains of extremely durable fibers. Most of us think of polymers as plastics, but there are other forms of polymers which contain long, strong chains of molecules such as Nomex. While it will burn while there is direct contact with flame or another heat source, it will completely extinguish itself once the heat source or the flame is removed. In other words, it does not conduct heat or flame, so while one portion of it may become singed or damaged the heat will not transfer and continue to damage the suit. This works as a wonderful barrier between a flame or heat source and the skin because it won’t transfer the heat or the flame from the source to the skin. The fibers will absorb some of the heat from the source, keeping it away from the skin. As the fibers absorb the heat, the fibers actually thicken and swell. This thickening and swelling of the fibers actually acts as another layer of protection for wearers of Nomex because it then adds an additional layer of insulation.

What Makes The CWU 27/p Flight Suit So Popular?

Aside from its insulating abilities, the CWU 27/p flight suit is lightweight, comfortable to wear, and extremely durable. Its uses have expanded far beyond the cockpit of airplanes to being commonly worn by U.S. military troops ground forces–particularly those who are driving tanks. They help protect wearers against chemical exposure, heat from explosives, and have some degree of radiation protection. The flight suit is also popular because of the anti-static fibers incorporated into the Nomex and Kevlar blend. These fibers are used to help prevent static electricity from building up and causing further risk of fire or explosion in the presence of certain chemicals and gases. The zippers of these flight suits are solid brass, making them extremely durable and able to be worn for years without damage or wear and tear.

How to become a fighter pilot in the USA?

The main path is through the Air Forces Academy and the Naval Academy

Military pilots, especially those flying on a supersonic aircraft belong to one of the most respectable and elite groups in the U. S. Armed Forces. Their profession is on the list of the most interesting and amazing job. After all, who does not want to be, even for a second, like Tom Cruise and take off from a carrier while watching the movie “Top Gun”? No wonder so many young people dream about it and link their future with it. Every branch of the United States Armed Forces is equipped with a military aircraft, but only the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps have fighter jets. The road to become a military pilot, especially a fighter pilot is tough and not possible for everybody.
First and most important is a college degree. To be a military pilot you need to become an officer and to be an officer you need a college degree. This means one needs to have bachelor’s degree and completed Officers Candidate School (OCS) to become a fighter jet pilot. Also becoming an officer does not guarantee flying a fighter jet before being commissioned as a pilot. This is due to the fact that medical and physical requirements are so high and those who cannot fulfill them cannot become fighter pilots.
For those who are still in high school and aspire to be a fighter pilot the best way is through the Air Forces and the Naval Academies. Entering one of the academies is extremely difficult and it calls for hard work during high school. Not only high ranks and perfect exam results are a minimum requirement, but also extra activities that prove leadership abilities or athletic skills are necessary. Moreover, recommendation letters and support from local congress people is very helpful.
However, after entering the academy there is still a lot to do. Many cadets desire the pilot slots and competition begins again. Being commissioned as a pilot depends on the class rank, extra activities and, of course, medical and physical predispositions. For those lucky young cadets in the Air Force Academies there is the Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT), a 1-year-long initial flight training. It starts with a screening program, similar to the Private Pilot License course. After it, the class is split into those who will fly helicopters, heavy aircraft and fighter jets. The priority of choice is given to the best students and they will probably fly supersonic jets in the future. The rest has to settle for the other aircrafts. Those cadets who receive fighters compete during the rest of the course for the opportunity to become a pilot of a plane they would like to fly. Again it does depend on the class rank, instructor’s opinion and the Air Force’s demand.
Finally, after this great competition and graduation a pilot training cadet waits for the centrifuge and survival training. For those who pass it, the Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals course (IFF) begins and it is performed on Northrop T-38 Talon. This is the last flying course before going to operational Major Weapon System (major aircraft). The basic course (B-course) and the introductory training course for the chosen fighters is the last stop before being transferred to an operational unit. After several months of training a cadet becomes a Mission Ready (MR) wingman and a full operational fighter pilot.

The road to become the fighter pilot after the Navy Academies looks similar, especially during the first years. After gaining a pilot slot the training starts with the Introductory Flight Screening (IFS) and Aviation Preflight Indoctrination (API). Following the API completion the Primary Flight Training begins and students pilots learn to fly the T-6 Texan II Beechcraft or the T-34C Turbo Mentor. At this point cadets choose the Intermediate and Advance Flight Training paths: helicopters, the MV-22 Osprey, heavy military planes and finally Tailhook aircraft. After an advanced training, pilots go to Fleet Replacement Squadrons (FRS) where they start flying on their specific aircraft.

Different ways to become a fighter pilot

The second way to become a fighter pilot is Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTS). This solution is for those who want to study in a normal way as a civil, but along with the preparation training for officers during a college or a university education. The student’s duty is to attend a military training and courses, mostly at the weekends, and spend at least one summer on a training camp. When the officer training is complete, there is an option to apply for the pilot training. The competition is fierce and requirements are high so it is a difficult way, but in the end you can gain the pilot slot and start UPT or IFS training.
The third and last way for future pilots is the Officer Candidate School (OCS), also known as the Officer’s training school. Those who graduate civil colleges and gain a bachelor’s degree without a military background can attend officer courses. During four months of training a cadet can become an officer and apply for the pilot training. The same rule applies to this group: great medical and psychical condition is required, moreover applicants have to be before the age of twenty-seven. This all means that there is not much time left after studies to become a military pilot.

You can still be a fighter pilot as a civilian

Becoming a fighter pilot is a long and difficult task. Not everybody can meet all requirements, especially those medical and physical ones. Moreover, during all the years of study and UPT a candidate cannot be sure about his future. But if you still dream about becoming a military pilot and you do not have any chance to go to the U.S. Armed Force, there is a solution. In the USA as well as in Europe you can become a fighter pilot for one day and fly a real fighter jet like the L-39 Albatros. With an experienced flight instructor in a two-seater fighter jet you can for a moment feel like a real military pilot and perform amazing maneuvers while flying. Unfortunately not anybody can join the famous Blue Angels for a F/A-18 flight, but the possibility exists – unfortunately not for everybody.

The Blue Angels are some kind of marketing tool to enhance US Navy and Marine corps aviation recruiting. Also, the Blue Angels are ambassadors for the US Armed Forces and the United States in general. Generally, no supersonic flights are allowed by Civilians above the US and Europe. We sometimes have requests if we can offer F-16 Flights, F-18 Flights or even F-22 Flights. Unfortunately, that is not possible. And I guess the costs for an F-22 ride would be a bit too high for most.

Who can fly in the F/A-18 Hornet Jet with the Blue Angels?

There are fixed rules, however it is not possible to buy a backseat flight with the Blue Angels without “being selected”. In other countries it is possible to fly a supersonic fighter, such as the supersonic MiG-29 Flight in Russia. With the Blue Angels, it is different. Remember, they are a marketing tool. So the aim is to spread the image that it is really cool to be a Navy Pilot. Which is, of course, true. The Blue Angels have 3 backseats each show to give away, with pilot #7.

Now, which lucky guy gets one of these seats? Two of the jet rides with the Blue Angels go to people selected by the Key Influencer program (KI). Key Influencers are those with substancial influence among young people, the targeting group for Navy and Marines recruiting (sorry older guys, this is the truth).

So it is expected these influencers go to the influenced crowd and tell them how cool the Blue Angels ride are (and hopefully also how cool the Blue Angels/Navy/Marines are).

“They are not always the person at the top of an organization, but rather individuals that have a strong impact on recruiting youth and/or a specific target audience.”

And here is our favorite among these influencers, Kaci Aitchison (is there also a pretty girls program we haven’t heard of?!?)

In fact, Kaci Aitchison is not only a singer and comedian, but also a Reporter for Q13 FOX News. So she somehow belongs to both categories. And I guess the pilot wouldn’t mind to fly twice with her…


The G-Force Blackout

Now, there is a second category allowed to fly, as indicated above. The third backseat each show is given away to a “credentialed media representative”. And here comes our Chewing-Gum-Steve (others call hem Pass-Out-Steve or Are-you-with-me-Steve). They have up to 7Gs during their flight.

Alternatives to Flights with the Blue Angels

As written before, unfortunately we can’t offer flights with the Blue Angels. But you can get a supersonic flight, one of our MiG-29 customers had up to 9Gs during his MiG flight. For that you have to travel to Nizhniy Novgorod in Russia. Alternatives are the comparably priceworthy Fighter Jet Rides in the L-39 Albatros.
